Carolyn Harlan Hughes

 

 

Carolyn Harlan Hughes is a native Houstonian and proud 1965 honor graduate of Kashmere Gardens Senior High School.  She and her lifelong friend, Linda Sims Calhoun, were tennis champs while attending Kashmere, winning City awards in 1964 and City and District awards in 1965 as doubles champions.  She and Linda also placed second in the 1965 State games.  Of course, Mrs. Ozell Harris, her tennis instructor, was one of her most admired instructors as well as Mrs. Laura Calhoun, her typing and shorthand instructor. Following graduation, Mrs. Hughes attended Texas Woman’s University “TWU” where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Secretarial “Business” Administration and minor in Economics and Accounting.

Upon graduating from TWU in 1969, Mrs. Hughes was employed by Shell Oil Company “Shell”.  Her formal working career encompassed 34 years with Shell in the areas of Corporate Legal, Chemical Advertising and Office Management.  Since retiring in 2004, her relationship continues with many co-workers.

Honors that Mrs. Hughes have received are Outstanding Young Women of America (82), City of Houston Service Award for Community Service (89), many Boy Scouts of America awards, including the highest scout leader award, the Silver Beaver Award in 1996.  While employed at Shell, she earned the Scale of Excellence, Special Recognition, Job Well Done and BRAVO awards.  In 2010 she was honored as the Kashmere Senior High School Hall of Fame Honoree.  For the past fifteen years, Carolyn has been recognized as being the top Shell UNCF Walk Captain for raising the most monies with the help of her Willing Walkers Team and loyal supporters.   The United Negro College Fund “UNCF” honored her in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 as Top Team Captain for the City of Houston with the most monies raised as well as the Stellar Award in 2014.  

Mrs. Hughes has enjoyed volunteering with severally handicapped children at Thomas Care Center, the PTA at Windsor Village Elementary, Johnston and T. H. Rogers Middle Schools, and Lamar, Reagan and Madison High Schools, SERVE at Shell, Spiritual Counselor for Middle and High School students, Prison Ministry, Board Member of the Windsor Village Civic Club, UNCF Walk Captain for Shell for 23 years, Homeless Ministry at her church, Kashmere Scholarship Committee, Boy Scouts of America for 39 years in various positions with the Sam Houston Area Council, Pack 4500/1500 and Troop 500 of Brentwood Baptist Church “BBC” where under her leadership as Chartered Organization Representative 19 boy scouts earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout with her son Terry Price being the first Eagle Scout.  She also chaired a Task Force at BBC that developed and implemented a curriculum on Christian Sex Education for youth and formed a Marjorie Gertrude Humber Jackson Scholarship Fund (a Texas 501©3 Corporation) to help aspiring high school graduates attend college.

Mrs. Hughes is married to Mr. Marvin Hughes.  Together they have five children, James L. Price, Jr., Lakeisha Hughes, Caprice Price-Smith, Harry Hughes, and Terry Price, and they have six grandsons and one granddaughter.  Mrs. Hughes, along with Mr. Hughes, attends Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church.  She serves on the Educational Board, Levi Tribe, Comfort Ministry, Special Youth Events, and sings with the Woman of Praise Chorus.  She enjoys being with family and friends, volunteering where needed, and traveling with her husband, family, and friends.
